I tend to agree with 3 of the other posters that Seattle is an expensive place to live and the economy is bad. You can get a similar experience in Portland too, but it is only slightly less expensive and the economy is bad there too.

Unless you have a job lined up to pay the bills, you might want to consider waiting until you do because finding work right now is nearly impossible.

My son lived in Ballard while he went to school. It is centrally located near the university and Queen Anne. He (I) paid $1500 a month for a 2 bedroom dumpy apartment.

Moving to Seattle... I have a few questions about the neighborhoods.?

I might be moving to Seattle with my husband in a few months. Iâve been looking at neighborhoods and so far I like the following 3 areas:
Ballard â everybody says it is âexpensiveâ to live there. What exactly does this mean? How much should I expect to pay for a nice 1 and 2 bedroom apartment with a good kitchen? People also say that there are a lot of things to do. What would be a good example? Are there only cafes & restaurants or are there retail stores, malls, etc.?
Queen Anne â this one I know the least about. Iâd like to know about transportation. It looks very suburban-like.
Downtown â I see there are a lot of nice buildings â especially around 2nd & 3rd avenue. Is this a nice area? How is the transportation there?
Iâd love to hear from somebody whoâs lived in Seattle for a while.
P.S.: Iâd be moving from Midtown Manhattan (New York City.)

Hello, Andrea, though I am not from Seattle, I once stayed in the city for 3 months at my auntâs. So maybe I can offer you something inside :)

Ballard is definitely a good alternative if you like kinda urban life but want to avoid the bustle and bustle in Downtown Seattle. This residential neighborhood is located in northwest Seattle, with rich Scandinavian culture and tradition. Maybe due to its proximity to downtown and the variety of attractions, price for the properties in this neighborhood has been skyrocketing, making many local people move to less expensive neighborhoods. For instance, for an average 1-bedroom apartment with a kitchen, the rate is around $850 to $1500 monthly.

On the other hand, though living is a bit costly in Ballard, it is also convenient. First, this area is quite easy to access via Metro Transit route 15, 18, 17 and 44. Then Ballard is home to a number of Registered Historic Places, museums, parks, night clubs, shopping and dining venues. You can find everything in the neighborhood effortlessly, and your living is prone to be colorful and fun-filled, of course if you can afford it :)
Here are websites for an informative guide to Ballard. You can take a look:

As for Queen Anne, this neighborhood, due to its location on the highest hill in Seattle, is less prosperous than Ballard and downtown. However, it is celebrated for the panoramic views of downtown. It is comparatively small, with an area of only 2.8 sq miles and a population of 28,000 around. Its name is got from the architectural style of early establishments.

Queen Anne is conveniently connected to downtown district via Queen Anne Avenue, the main thoroughfare in the neighborhood. Thus, a number of award-winning restaurants, upscale hotels, and housing properties choose Queen Anne as an ideal hub at lower rates. When it comes to housing rentals, the rate is about $1.25 to $2 per sq ft. In fact, Queen Anne is much more preferred by young professionals, students and natural lovers. If you love natural beauty and vintage atmosphere, maybe you will love Queen Anne.

Well, there seems to be no need to say much about downtown Seattle. As the major action zone of the city, this neighborhood houses the best and most attractions, businesses, housing properties, shopping and dining, etcâ¦..Located in the heart of Seattle, it has awesomely extensive transportation system, accessible in all directions! This is a beloved neighborhood for the rich, therefore, if money is not a problem to you and you love vibrant urban life, then downtown is certainly the best choice.
