Hi. I'm doing a simple comparison between certain developed countries according to living costs. I have already found some stuff here in Answers and on the web, but I've learned personal experience is always the best teacher. I've never been to Canada and would really appreciate the following information (for any big city like Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton etc. - when answering please be so kind to state which city you are providing information for):
- monthly rent (2 bedroom apartment, in the city or in the suburbs)
- monthly pay (a high school teacher / a university professor / a translator / a bank employee-loan analyst)
- average monthly costs for 2 people (electricity, gas, water, miscellaneous bills)
- tax rate (approximate estimate)
- a bottle of milk (please state brand and volume/weight)
- a pre-set meal in McDonald's
- one ride on the subway (2-3 stations apart)
- possibilities of employment for a teacher or a professor (low / so-so / good)
Answer
ok well...
Montreal :
on average, montreal has lower rent price than other canadian cities.
average for a house: 276, 017
here is a site with all the other cities in canada (so you can compare the prices)
http://www.montrealinternational.com/en/vivre/habitation.aspx
for appartment costs in montreal, check out this site to see the average:

for monthly pay... minimum wage is 8$ but the jobs you mentioned obviously pay more. I think a teacher (highschool) makes around $40 000 a year.
average monthly cost for 2 people would be: roughly 800$, not more depending what you spend on, how much gas you buy, how much food you buy, etc. (water is free)
the tax rate is around 15%
milk: lactancia, 4 liters is $6. 29 plus taxes.
one litre is $3.57 + taxes
a meal at mc donalds:
there's a value meal thats like a trio for 2.99 or something like that.
if you want a big mac trio its around $7.00, not more.
montreal has a very good metro station.
here are the prices:
http://www.stm.info/English/info/a-tarif.htm
you can go wherever you want with the metro using the same ticket. as soon as you get out you have to get another ticket to get back in. you can have a free bus ride if you take a bus transfer (in a little machine that you just press a button)
in montreal there are english schools, french schools, elementary schools, highschools, cegeps, universities, private schools, public schools, I'd say its the best place to go to school in canada. the education system is really good. so the employment rate for a teacher would be good.
hope this helps you!
bye
