All those lurking interior designers. Any ideas on how to do a City styled room?

Anastacia

I want to do a room design in sort of a city scape. But I don't know where to start. All I have right now is a massive grey room. Does anyone have ideas on how to do a city-esque room? Or can you provide links? I've been searching around, and I haven't found anything good, except for a red phone booth idea for the door.

Thanks for the help!
I'm looking for either New York or London. A very grungy city design to be more specific.

You want a good city garbage can http://www.globalindustrial.com/g/office/garbage-recycling/containers-outdoor-steel/outdoor-steel-mesh-trash-receptacles This you turn upside down and put an old round table top on painted black and grey.

Line the bottom part of your wall with wire mesh http://www.bridgat.com/index.php?page=search&cid=7&hw_num=10&s_res=AND&off=11&s_by=f_title&a_d=desc

Find some funky lamps at a thrift store and spray paint them black and silver and rust.

Make a low table from an old pallett. Get 2 ...Lift the top boards and then set them together without a gap. For the legs use old lawn mower wheels http://www.homeaccentstoday.com/articles/blog/1960000396/20090413/986-Furniture_Factory_Cart.1_04-12-2009_K218Q29Q.standalone.prod_affiliate.81.jpg This will work for your TV and stereo.

How do we find an apartment in New York for someone who works for Deloitte?

Penny de V

Okay Yahoo Friends. My son is 23 years old. We live in a very small southern town. He will be graduating in December with an MPA (Masters of Public Accountancy) and has landed a job in New York City with Deloitte Touche. My husband and I are so happy for him and he is also very excited. He will not start working until January 2011.

This is really a two part question. 1) does anybody know if Deloitte will offer some sort of assistance for finding a place to live,i..e places to rent, roommates lists, etc 2) if not, where do we begin to look for an apartment? This one detail (finding an apartment in New York) has consumed my thoughts. And yes, my son doesn't seem too concerned and I know he's grown and I should just let go but I cannot do this.

Answer
1. Deloitte won't help.

2. Finding an apartment in NY is difficult. Deloitte pays new employees (those straight out of school) about $70,000 a year. A New York landlord looks for a renter's income to be at least 40 times the monthly rent. That means, $1,750 is the most a landlord will allow your son to pay in rent. Believe it or not, but that won't get much in Manhattan or the more popular parts of the other boroughs. Your son should look in either Queens, Brooklyn, or New Jersey. In Jersey, I would recommend that he look in Hoboken, which is a popular place for kids just out of college.

Does he know anybody who is also moving to NY? He could share a nice two- or three-bedroom apartment in Manhattan. Even in Queens, Brooklyn, or NJ, I would recommend that he try to share an apartment. After all, every dollar he spends on rent isn't available for him to meet friends for a drink after work, take a vacation, etc.

Some more bad news is that most landlords won't allow a co-signer on a lease unless the co-signer lives in the area. As others have pointed out, the expense of getting an apartment is high. Most rentals in Manhattan and a large portion of those other parts of the area are done through a broker. The broker's fees range from the equivalent of one month's rent to 15% of the first year. The security deposit is also one month of rent, so a $1,750 apartment will require around $5,000 just to move into the place.

You should get an idea of what his take-home pay will be so that you can help him budget his money. My favorite site is Paycheck City http://www.paycheckcity.com/netpaycalcreg/netpaycalculator.asp Your son should take advantage of several tax-advantaged benefits such as setting flexible spending plans for transit expenses and medical expenses. (Most flex plans allow you to use the money to pay for OTC medications such as aspirin, cold medicine, etc.)

Yes, he needs to grow up quickly and take an active role in searching for a place to live, etc.; however, do you want him to fall on his face in the event he has to tell Deloitte that he can't take the job because he doesn't have a place to live?

When he or you (meaning you and him) come to look for a place to live be prepared to pay much of the $5,000 I previously mentioned with cashier's checks. Luckily, some of the larger banks in the South have a lot of branches in New York (Wachovia, Bank of America, etc.) Some of the hotter areas have apartments that go quickly. If you like a place and it is close to transit, you may need to commit the day you see it.

I hope this helps.
Gary
