I'll be staying in this place for 7 months, but then I'm leaving to study abroad in Spain and I don't want to have to pay the storage fees after I leave.
All I need is maybe a queen sized bed, a dresser, and a nightstand. Nothing too fancy.
But then of course when I come back I'll need more furniture too, so should I go ahead and buy some cheap furniture and just pay the storage costs?

Answer
how long will you be gone untill you come back. check storage prices i don't think storage is cheap.

How do I make my small room look bigger?

I have a queen sized bed, its one of those two beds that are stacked on top of each other, and it takes up so much of space. At the moment I cant get rid of it, and also I have a desk and heaps of school books around my room. Help.

Answer
There are no fail ways to decorate a small room so it does not look cramped and cluttered.

First, the walls should be a light color. If you look at colors that are shades of white, you can find some nice shades. Let me describe shades of white: for instance, take a gallon of white paint and add 1/2 cup to one cup of any color -- you will end up with a light and fresh diluted version of the color that has wonderful undertones without being overbearing. The color will be there and it will effect the decor in your room but it is subtle.

Now, use a solid bed spread or comforter in a light color. And, solid curtains to match the bed. I know this sounds boring, but bear with me. The devil is in the details and this is where you add your color with decorative pillows for the bed, sheets, a ribbon stripe on the bottom of your curtains, accessories in lamps and wall art. So, what colors do you select for these accents?? Any color you want. And, this is where the paint comes in........let's say you find some gorgeous turquoise pillows. You would then use turquoise in that gallon of paint to tint it. This makes the room cohesive and airy. There is ready made paint in the shades of white I am referring to.

Now, for the furniture. Your floor space is valuable real estate and needs to be clutter free. Try to use vertical storage -- the walls. Instead of a book shelf that rests on the floor, arrange shelving on the walls over your desk. You could put one shelf high to the right, another lower to the left and yet another one the width of your desk within easy reach. This book shelf could be deep and well organized with wicker or canvas bins to store stuff. The shelving can be for books, nick nacks and what have you? Keeping your desk surface clutter free.

Get an over the door plastic see through shoe organizer. This is the perfect place to store a bunch of stuff in the pockets. You can put wires to your electronics in the pockets. Hair accessories and hair products, lotions, make up, over sized jewelry and what not.

Clean out your closet. You have stuff you can get rid of--everybody does. Hang a double rod to increase the hanging space if you can. Get bins to organize things on a top shelf in there. Invest in a shoe rack. Go through your dresser, too. You would be amazed how much space you will have once you go through one drawer a day and downsize your belongings. If you are not using it, pack it up and store it in the attic, basement or garage until you need it. That goes for seasonal clothing that are taking up valuable storage space you could be using day to day.

Try to find accessories that shine with silver/chrome finishes and glass for lamps, baskets and hardware. These things reflect light which will bounce back at you. Get a second hand dining room chair and use it for your desk area and paint it metalic silver!

If you can, place a dresser in your closet for extra floor space in your bedroom.

If you implement a few of these tips, I am absolutely positive you will see a great improvement in the space you have because you will be visually changing the area and physically placing things to maximize the space you do have.
