I am graduating with my Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning at a research university in Florida, United States. I plan to get a job as a Planner I job either in a large city (i.e, Tampa, Orlando, Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Palm Beach Metropolitan Area, and Jacksonville) here in Florida, California, or a large area somewhere in Canada ( i.e, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Manitoba, or Saskatchewan).
I don't see myself dating/marrying for a while, nor do I want children. So I will be myself for a good time. I plan on living in a luxury apartment/condo in a downtown area. Orlando and Toronto have caught my eye. Condos for a one bedroom condo are $1150-1500 a month rent. I wish to own a Volvo, mercedes, BMW, you know?
By the way, I will be applying to the AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners) which adds another $18000 to my salary as a Planner. If I get a job in Canada I will apply to the CICP (Canadian Institute of Certified Planners) which has a reciprocal agreement with AICP.
I want to travel at least twice a year. I love to travel. Places I plan to travel will be all over the world!
So, will I be able to prove a great quality of life for myself with a $65k-80k annual salary by myself?
Answer
Let's look at the 65k salary, since right now that is the realistically achieved aim. Frankly, the fact that you're even starting at 65k is a little crazy, but let's say that's realistic.
That would mean you're making 52k a year after taxes, or $4333 a month
10% goes to long-term (Retirement) savings: $433.30 a month
15% goes to debt repayment/emergency fund: $649.95 a month gets set aside into a regular savings account until you have at least $25 998 saved up (6 times monthly income).
35% goes to housing (rent, mortgage, bills, utilities, insurances, etc.): All-inclusive, you could afford $1516.55 a month, which is what you can technically afford if the numbers you've looked at are all-inclusive; the idea is also to aim well below this number, so that you can put left-overs into another savings account for repairs and household needs.
15% goes to transportation (gas, insurance, repairs, bus): $649.95 a month.
25% goes to life (food, entertainment, clothing, gifts, travel, medical, wants, phone, internet, cable, other): $1083.25 a month, or $270.81 a week.
There are families of 6 who can live off of this income.
