Central Air Broken, Should I fix it or Use Window AC Unit?

I recently purchased a very small home just south of Atlanta.. The house is 1 level and 2 bedrooms, just over 1200 sq feet.. I know this isn't much space but I'm the only person who lives here.. I purchased this house for a spectacular price.. The home was a foreclosure deal and I purchased it at an auction for just under 70k... The home is only 8 years old, and the original cost of the home was 179k...

Yesterday I woke up around 7 in the morning covered in sweat.. I noticed immediately things were too quiet.. I go to the thermostat and the temp is set at 74 but there's no cool air blowing from the vents... I called a AC company and they said to shut it down a few hours, that maybe the pipes had frozen.. So I shut it down and went out for a couple of hours.. Went to a movie, grocery store.. Return home, turn it back on, Nothing.. Luckily for me by the time I got home ( Night time )it was in the low 70's outside so I just put a block fan in my window blowing cool air from outside into my bedroom which quickly cooled things down..

I've been on the phone with various AC companies and all of them pretty much have the exact same policies, the cheapest company I've found said it would be $80 to send someone out just to diagnose the problem. Right now I'm really low on funds.. I recently switched jobs and my first paycheck won't be here until the middle of august, I have to make it thru 3 weeks of training before getting my first check. Walmart has Window AC units for 79$, Should I just purchase one of those and set it up in my living room, and use the bedroom fan at night until I can afford to get the central air fixed? I really can't afford to shell out god knows how much to get the central air fixed.

If your system is not running at all then the problem could be very simple and the HVAC tech could fix it during that check out.
There are several things you can check and fix.

1. Check circuit breakers
2. Check water pump (if indoor unit is in the attic)
3. Check safety switch for water level
