What's the best way to go about selling furniture?

I'm thinking about selling my furniture before I move. I have tons of stuff: queen bedroom set, trundle bed, desk, dinning room table, kitchen table, couches, coffee tables and end tables.

Selling furniture is really tricky, because you will have to ask much less than the furniture is worth, and then not even get the asking price.
Sometimes it is better to donate it to a non profit, then you will get a tax write off that might be even more than the cash you would get from selling it.
If you do want to sell it, give yourself plenty of time......it is hard to sell things in a rush.
I would suggest using Craigslist.org

Be sure to take pictures of all the things you are selling, then put them on a photo sharing site, then include a link to it in your craigslist add. Also include a couple of photos in the ad itself.

Next, be prepared to have your time wasted by non serious inquiries, people who stand you up (say they will come to buy the furniture, then don't), people who want to haggle you down to an unrealistically low price, and worst, people who have unrealistic expectations, like for you to ship it to their house.

Be very clear in your expectations: cash only, pick up only.

Also, don't be afraid to throw in a freebie or two.... for example, if someone buys your couch, throw in an end table or a lamp.

Selling furniture is hard, time consuming, and you might not sell all of it.

So keep your expectations realistic, give yourself plenty of time, and don't let yourself get screwed.

Need some decorating tips. What goes with black furniture?

I'm moving into a new house, and my master bedroom is totally white right now... a blank palette! I have a few large windows, vaulted ceilings, and black furniture, mainly a large armoire for my TV, a black queen bed, and black nightstands. I like feminine colors and sheer fabrics... but what can I do for decorating? I feel like the black will make everything look too harsh and can't afford all new bedroom furniture right now.

Thanks!

Black is a very versatile "colour" that happens to be very trendy now. You have many choices in terms of colour schemes.

Light blues ranging from powder blue to robin's egg, pale grey-blue, green-blue all work well with black furniture. White, ivory, certain shades of brown, or grey can be used as accent/trim colour and accessories in glass (cut glass to look like crystal), mirror, lacy patterns and textures, and stainless steel or chrome would work perfectly.

Dark pinks and pink-purples (fuchsia, raspberry, pale plum-like shades) would work well too. Accessories can be similar to above, or white or ivory with a heavier style to them to make them "pop" against the darker colour scheme.

Many other colours will also work wonderfully. Some to consider are: cafe au lait type neutrals, greens (think celery), silvery grey, terra cotta and gold with rattan accents...

A good trick to pulling highly contrasting colours together is to use a layered-look whenever possible. Sheer curtains can be trimmed with fabric trim (an easy do-it-yourself project), beaded strands and fabric trim can be glued on to the bottom of a lamp shade, use framed art with wider mats around them and even frames with 2 colours (silver and black would be great).

You can also conceal some of the black of the furniture (although you really don't have to) by draping a throw over the foot-board of the bed, placing a table-runner to match your bedding over the dressers and/or nightstands, and so on.

Good luck and enjoy the new house!
